In addition, a great deal of history is woven into the descriptions and anecdotes. The chapter on "250 Years of Architecture and History Enjoyed by Famous Visitors" is particularly engaging. The role of women in preserving and protecting the heritage of Savannah is crucial, as emphasized in the chapter titled "Four Marys and More: Women Developers and Preservers". The only slight improvement to be suggested for the book would add to it's quite reasonable costs, that is, to add the element of color to the many exquisite photographs of houses, buildings and paintings. A very good study, but I agree that the b/w photos provide less than exuberant views of the described architecture. Repeat detailed block maps would be helpful as each is reviewed throughout the chapters. I kept referring to the vague master map.
This was a lovely book that gave interesting and valuable information!!! It will be great to review while there vacationing!!!

Great book. Gives one a great appreciation of beautiful Savannah. It also demonstrates the value of the cities architectural treasures and the important preservation movement.

I've never written a review on Amazon before, but this book drags me to the task.The book is very well written with beautifully composed essays on the history of Savannah and its preservation. It is not, however, an architectural guide book as one would expect from the title.To be sure, the book provides historical and architectural descriptions of various buildings in the city but fails to provide that information in an easy-to-use format. There are no maps which key descriptions to locations. If one happens to find a building to read the description, it would be logical that a description of the adjacent building would follow. This is typically not the case. Sometimes the next description is of a building across the street or even the square. Then back again in a haphazard, higgledipiggledy fashion. In a similar way, one section of the city is not followed by an adjacent section. Instead, the "guide" sends you to a square on the other side of town without explanation or apology.The unnecessary frustration caused by this book could easily be corrected with maps and a numbering system. Without these features, the book is maddening at best and useless at worst.Buyer be ware.
This book is full of interesting information on this uniquely southern city. The text is scholarly and indepth and many entries are accompanied with an image. If you are going to Savannah or have ever been interested in this singular city then I highly recommend this book to you and by all means bring it with you on your trip.
