This is an excellent book if you are having any difficulty hanging scales off of chords or needing to stay in the same position while changing to a different scale or key.Country is different from rock in that the country solos change scales over their associated chords – so it’s critical to learn to associate scales and licks with their associated chord forms. This will let you play over the one chord, then switch to a lick based off of the four chord form (in the same position) and visualize something different for the five chord as well. If this is something you would like to become proficient at, this book might just help you understand how to do it.Early on Levi shows how to make simple phrases from 1-4-5 arpeggios around the top four strings. This was a real eye opener for me. I had spent about a year memorizing phrases from Brent Mason,Red Hot Country Guitar,Daniel Donato, and 100 Country Licks (among other resources), getting them up to speed with a metronome and then transposing them into any other keys. It was obvious when those licks were pegged around a chord form. So when I worked through this early section of Levi’s book, it was easy to spice this basic lesson up – this was my revelation – the root pitch is also the fifth in the four chord, so you can easily pivot from the one chord to the four chord on that. Likewise, the flat seven of the one chord is one half step above the three of the four chord – another pivot. The flat seven of the four chord is one half step below the one of the five chord… you get the idea. With flat sevens, flat fives, and minor / major thirds, suddenly the chord forms are all easy to slide around in without any large intervallic jumps. Start with the metronome on 60, play sixteenths starting in open position and play two bars on the one, one on the four, one on the five, and end on the one chord in the next higher position. Continue up the neck through each inversion of the one chord. Suddenly the neck opens up! This was a real eye opener for me, and really makes me want to push myself harder to master this technique. Of course, as time goes on, the metronome speed should be increased with whatever your target goal is.I would say that a chapter on alternate picking is a bit strange to me in a country method. I have always played with a thumbpick, and most usually I use three NP-2's. Don't most country pickers use their right hand fingernails? And a good many do not use a flatpick - Brent Mason, for example. That said, there are still some interesting exercises here, and some licks worth remembering. Which is another great thing about the book - even when explaining a pedagogical technique, the examples are all musically valid! That makes practicing much, much more engaging. It also means that even if the chapter might not apply to you, it's still worth getting through to see the music being explained. The chapter on slurring also has a lot of examples to study, with an emphasis on using slurs to move from one chord form to the next or previous position of the form. Again, very useful.So a big thanks to Levi for another excellent book. This book is an excellent resource in your country guitar library.

I've been following Levi on his youtube channel and greatly appreciate his contributions I made a lot of progress thanks to his youtube channel. I've been diving into country rock lately (my background is more blues) and it looks I'll stick o it for a while. I already did a first pass on the book that is very complete. Been practicing some licks and examples and found myself technically limited (I have stupid fingers) for example with the banjo rolls.So basically an excellent method that will give me a lot to work on!!

Great examples and audio files. Wanted to learn more hybrid picking essential to country guitar. Exercises are buildup to good technique.
