As an industrial engineer I certainly appreciated the many concepts presented on an academic level and thought I knew everything I needed to know on the subject. But Professor Roser's well written narrative put it all into historical context in a way that I didn't fully appreciate. I wish I had this book in college, it would have made the learning so much easier! We all take for granted that interchangeable parts make economic sense and produce better products. But few of us appreciate why it took so long to put this concept into practice. Many assume Japanese Lean manufacturing is made up of tags on parts, meetings with employees, and other acts of "magic." But why do so many fail at implementing this proven system? Professor Roser's book will enlighten and help you to really understand. This book has earned a place on my bookshelf.

This is a great book that describes the history of manufacturing from the stone age up until today. It delves not only in the inventions and technical progresses that made manufacturing advances, but also importantly, in the organization of work and the evolution of management. There is a visual timeline at the end of the book that displays how the pace of progress and evolution has accelerated throughout the existence of mankind and is quite impressive. I highly recommend this book.
