About the Author

Craig Harline is the author of numerous books on the history of Christianity, especially during the Reformation, including Conversions: Two Family Stories From the Reformation and Modern America (2011), which was a finalist for the Mark Lynton History Prize from the Columbia School of Journalism, and Sunday: A History of the First Day From Babylonia to the Super Bowl (2007), which was one of Publishers Weekly's Best Religion Books of the Year. His memoir, Way Below the Angels: The Pretty Clearly Troubled But Not Even Close to Tragic Confessions of a Real Live Mormon Missionary (2014) received Foreword Reviews' INDIEFAB Book of the Year award in the category of Religion. He is currently Professor of History at Brigham Young University, and has been a visiting professor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, in Belgium.

For the 2017 "500th Anniversary" I have read several of the new books that have come out this year about Martin Luther and reread some earlier favorites. I was not sure I wanted to read yet another one when this came out in October, but I am very glad I did buy and read it. It tells the story of the central years of Luther's life in a very engaging and winsome manner and was a joy to read, even for someone who was already familiar with his life. It is not a long book, but by focusing on the most crucial episodes the author is able to include a lot of interesting detail and bring things to life. It pays some attention to Luther's theological issues but without getting bogged down in that. While the author is willing to spin things to move the story along, I did not see any factual material that struck me as possibly questionable.

This book brought Martin Luther back to life. In addition to his great ideology, he was a lively person enjoying a great conversation as well good food and beer. I also got a better grasp of the political background at the time and a better understanding of why things happened as they did.I was struck by the similarity between the internet development and the printing press and the religious revolution and the current U.S. political situation.

A fine tale well told in a scholarly, but very readable and interesting manner. I had no idea who Luther was . . .or of his travails and strength of character. Well done indeed, Dr. Harline!

This Book is so well written, I couldn't put it down. I have read accounts of Martin Luther before but this one just carried me along with it. Luther came across as a very human person as opposed to a cardboard character.

Such a great book. I loved it.

Fascinating glimpse into the beginnings of Luther's "rebellion."The book was well documented and, as is often true, showed that life can be stranger and more interesting than fiction. A good read on many different levels.
