I’m really reviewing the whole series here, because, if you’ve looking at the third book, you’re already hooked. This is where the writing started to get sloppy.First let me stress that I enjoyed the story very much. It’s fairly predictable and formulaic, but the protagonist is engaging and relatable, as are many of the supporting characters. I don’t absolutely need originality if the story is good, and it is. I’m not sorry I read them.But. The writing - the wordcraft - is not worthy of the story. I don’t know if they accidentally published the kindle editions before final editing, or what, but the text desperately needs a thesaurus and an English teacher with a red pen. There are relatively few grammatical errors - not enough to complain about - but there are SO MANY wasted words. The author never, ever, EVER writes, “They walked over the hill,” if he can write, “The young man and the slender, wiry girl were quietly moving forward, step by slow step, quietly making their slow way to the top of the nearby hill that needed to be climbed, so that they could then descend into the quiet valley to be found on the other side.”The excessive passive voice, endlessly repeated adjectives and adverbs, and just ridiculously profligate use of words and more words, seriously interfered with the story. And I used derivatives of “quiet” in that example advisedly - this is clearly the authors favorite descriptor. Everyone, everywhere, says everything quietly, or in a quiet voice. They do not murmur, or mutter, or breathe, or gasp, or speak under their breath or sotto voce. (Ok, they do do some of these, but nowhere NEAR as much as they speak quietly.) In book four, which was the worst in this respect, “quietly” appears 285 times, with an additional 69 uses of “quiet.” “Loudly” appears twice.I’m apparently pickier than most about the actual syntax of the stories I read, given how many glowing reviews I’ve seen for authors who barely seem literate. Thus my criticisms may be irrelevant to many of you. If you’ve never had an issue with poor wordcraft, please ignore this review. The story is good. Some of the female characters are pretty one-dimensional - and wimpy - but Kitai makes up for that, and the antagonists are an interesting bunch. I am not sorry I purchased them, but I’m not sure I’ll be able read them again, and I re-read almost everything.

Jim Butcher is brilliant. I’ve read the entire Dresden Files series, more than once! I’m reading The Codex Alera series for the 2nd or 3rd time. It still blows my mind how unique the plot line is. The books are filled with amazing plot twists. I am 41, so I can recommend this series to adults, but I’ve also suggested the series to my 9 year old daughter, therefore I would highly recommend this series to boys and girls 9+ years old. Thank you Jim Butcher. I look forward to more of your work.

This is the third book in Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series, and I get the feeling that this is where the story really gets rolling. We learn more about two of the principal political players in the realm, and we learn more about young Tavi's back-story. We also get a taste for what's going on in the larger world.I think what I really liked about this one, however, was seeing Tavi in action. Yes, we got some of that in the first two books, but here is where I think we really see him come into his own. You see, Tavi has never developed his "fury" powers, which are basically a magical mastery of the various elements (fire, earth, water, air, metal, plants, etc.). In that, he's kind of a powerless freak in an unkind world, but he's also a very intelligent powerless freak. So here, we finally get to see him use his intelligence to not only overcome his lack of furycrafting, but to outwit and outmaneuver those with much greater abilities. The book also has some major revelations about both the past and future of the realm. The First Lord is old and without an heir, and this book finally opened up the door on some new possibilities of what is going to happen when the old man finally dies. It left us with a teaser, bordering on a cliffhanger, that has made me eager to get to the next one.

Good, good, good book. Tavi is growing up, and his mysterious past, and why he has no furies is finally revealed.Things that are really good:1. Maximus2. Maximus3. Grown-up Ehren4. Kitai5. Tavi as a legionnaire captainoh wait, .5. The Freaking Canim. Finally Tavi's got some worthy adversaries and while treachery is always afoot in the Kingdom of Alera, this time, there's far more open conflict. Butcher continues to write really well and put his characters through legitimately believable emotional turmoil and growth in a completely fantastic setting filled with awesome imagery and novel twists on epic action. There's nothing not to like about this book, and the way Butcher puts it together makes you feel rewarded for sticking with the series. Questions about key characters' dubious past lives are revealed and the political intrigue gets far thicker and stickier. A perfect example of how one can write really awesome adventure fiction and still be incredibly intelligent. I can't help but compare this series to the Ender series. And every time I do, I think, Butcher wins. This is what Ender should have been after the first book. Card's geopolitical fantasies are an unrealistic shadow compared to the world of Alera. On to the next one.
