David William Neubauer has taught at the University of Florida, at Washington University in St. Louis, and most recently at the University of New Orleans. From the preface, p. xxii, emphasis mine:: "In a complex, sometimes contradictory, and often fragmented process, defendants are declared **innocent** or found guilty,..."That's really funny, because in EVERY criminal court proceeding I've witnessed the defendant was declared NOT GUILTY or GUILTY. Such a fundamental error in the second sentence of the Preface does not bode well for accuracy in the remainder of the book.

I've really grown to love the Amazon textbook rental program. Every book I have ever rented has come in great condition and has definitely saved me money. I will for sure be continuing to use this program for the rest of my time in college.

There is nothing of value in this book. You can find all of the subjects discussed in depth on the internet, well enough to get through any class that might ask you to buy this. The book has an obvious prosecution bias, and some of the "Case Close Ups" are quite misleading in their presentation of the "facts." The one on Roper v. Simmons presents the victim as a "neighborhood girl who befriended [the defendant]" when in fact it was a middle aged woman with whom he'd had a car accident. Not saying it wasn't still a horrendous crime or anything, but that is a misrepresentation seemingly calculated to incite passion in the reader against the defendant, when really, the crime was heinous enough without adding fuel. This is but one example of misrepresentations in this book, and other than referencing it to find out what the ____ my classmates are talking about, I haven't used it all semester. Save your money.

This is a textbook but a good read. There is a lot of information but if you are interested in the court system and how it works, it's a good resource.

Definitely a recommended text for instructors in political science at college.
