Anybody with a 24 X 7 job will appreciate Finn Murphy's auto-bio as along-haul trucker. It's about time someone with actual experiencein such a job writes about it. From my POV, it's like, in IT, you'rethe engineer who gets called at 3 AM when a computer running the factorygoes down and the hourly workers are idled. Who you are, where you are,what you are doing - doesn't matter. You must fix it. Right. Now.And, you can expect it to happen again in 15 minutes somewhere else.Murphy's story is not about computers, it's 18-wheelers, but that canbe even worse if he breaks down alone in the middle of nowhere withno food, water, tools, parts, warm clothing or a library to consult.Is this job worth the sacrifices? Well, it depends on the rewards.Mostly you are your own boss, you get good pay, respect and a real senseof accomplishment. Every day, there are new roads, new clients, new crews,things to learn and problems to solve. This job takes years to master soManagement can't replace you from the street in 5 minutes. You love it!Murphy is age 50+ and slowing down. He essentially lives in 18-wheelers'tractors, not his house. Personal details not needed, he could tell ushow someone who is never at home manages mail and other everyday things.What should he do in retirement? Write some more enjoyable books!

What a good book. It's the memoir of an autodidactic gentleman trucker. I'd rank it right up with Hillbilly Elegy by J.D.Vance. A thoughtful view of America from ten feet up in a Freightliner, hauling furniture cross-country. The writing is excellent and the narrator impressive and relatable. Here's a sample:"A Jake brake...sounds like a machine gun beneath my feet as it works to keep 70,000 pounds of steel and rubber under control."Also, this: "I was running north in a convoy with nine other trucks...We flew together for 130 miles doing 65 the whole way...it was wonderful...We all fell into a groove. Everybody was driving well, everybody was professional, everybody was going fast but not crazy fast, and there was a plane of consciousness that we had together. It's the closest thing to a Zen experience I know, except when I'm in my loading trance."And finally: "Terry dropped his trailer and hooked up (another). He pulled away in a glob of diesel smoke and a toot from the air horn. Gone. It's unlikely I'll ever see him again. He was a smart, thoughtful, and defeated man caught in the amber of class, education, and diminished expectations for himself and his progeny."Especially since the last election, many Americans are trying to learn more about their fellow countrymen, and the reality of the life of people they don't interact with. There should be a category of books called, "Learn about the Real America." The Long Haul and Hillbilly Elegy would be on that shelf.

“The Long Haul” is a very enjoyable book. My wife and I had the pleasure of listening to the Audible version while we were driving on a Colorado vacation. It’s the perfect book for a road trip! The book is kind of a mix between an autobiography, a book of short (true) stories, a social commentary, and a rare inside look at the trucking and moving industries. As an autobiography, the book tells the relatable story of a young man choosing a career of a vastly different lifestyle from what was expected of him (a career with sometimes life-threatening danger) and of how his decisions affect his life as he gets older. The book is full of stories that range from funny to sad to maddening to a mix of all three. All of the stories are told with the author’s trademark self deprecating humor and great compassion. The social commentary comes from an intelligent, educated man who has travelled the majority of this country over a span of several decades interacting with every socio-economic class and every racial ethnicity. The author shares some interesting knowledge to support his thoughtful theories and doesn’t hold back his opinions at all. The book also cracks open the trailer doors to reveal a subculture of truckers and movers and the equipment they use. This is a group of sometimes invisible men who nonetheless have very real feelings and desires and who work very hard. Throughout the book, the author acts as your guide and host with the same level of professionalism he strives to show his moving customers. I highly recommend this book. Be aware of some occasional “colorful” language.Full Disclosure: I’ve been doing volunteer work with the author, Finn Murphy for 8 years, and I’m happy to call him a friend. The volunteer work is not mentioned in the book, but I’m sure that he’s accumulated enough good stories to write a book about that if he choses to. In spite of (and as a result of) our friendship, I’m certain that Finn himself would enthusiastically testify that I would not have written a good review for this book unless it reflected my honest opinion.
