I realize it's early to call my favorite middle grade read of 2019, but I cannot imagine a book topping this one for me. If you enjoyed Mosquitoland by David Arnold then you'll love this. I loooove a main character with spunk and wit who you find yourself cracking up through all her interactions because she's just so perfectly herself. Toss in life on the road and picking up a cast of characters along the way, and it's the best kind of book (other than magic). Also, this book has made me realize I need to keep a reading journal. I was taking pictures of all these delightful sentences, like:"Good morning," I said, and while those words are technically nice words I said them so cold you coulda stirred 'em into a glass of milk and made ice cream.And"The eggs already broken, so we may as well enjoy the omelette."Solid 5 star read for me. Have tissues handy.

Coyote and Rodeo, her dad (though he doesn't like being called 'dad') have called a school bus home for the last 5 years. They go wherever they're called, whether it's toward the best taco truck in California or an excellent pork chop sandwich in Idaho. The one place Rodeo won't go, though, is the last place Coyote called home in Washington State. It's too hard, remembering what caused them to pack up and hit the road - the death of her mom and two sisters. But Coyote remembers. While watermelon slushees always disappoint, this book certainly does not! The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise by Dan Gemeinhart is a beatifully written middle grade novel which follows the journey of a girl named Coyote and her Dad, Rodeo, as they travel across the country on a school bus. What Rodeo doesn’t know is that Coyote is on a mission to save something important from her past, and she is determined to reach her destination before it is too late. But what if what she is running toward is exactly what Rodeo has been running away from for the last 5 years? With the help of the new friends who they meet along the road, Coyote and Rodeo find the strength to face their past and their memories. I love this book so much I keep ordering more and more copies to lend out to friends. As a teacher, I read a lot of middle grade novels and this is definitely my pick for best middle grade novel of 2019. Coyote’s voice is so authentic; I was drawn in from the very first chapter and could not put it down. Through laughter, and through tears, I felt like I was on this journey with Coyote and I was not getting off that bus! Trust me, this is a road trip you need to take. Read The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise by Dan Gemeinhart. You will not be disappointed.

Coyote has an Aha Moment in chapter one, she is tired of walking in and out of gas stations alone. The only problem is her dad, but don't tell him that, Rodeo is content to continue their life traveling across the country in a bus. When Coyote hears something from her grandma, she determines to find her way home across the country. Along the way, her bus fills with a delightful cast of characters, both human and animal, and each one helps her on her journey home. Coyote's story will stick with me for a very long time! #LitReviewCrew

Having read all of Dan Gemeinhart's books, I am a huge fan and he did not disappoint with this latest adventure! Such an amazing storyteller. I felt like I was a passenger on this wonderful ride! My heart is full for having experienced this fantastic, page turning, tale!

This book, while not a perfect story line, is filled with delightful characters including a dad and daughter suffering from a deep grief. Dan Geminhart is one of my new favorite authors. Scar Island, The Honest Truth, and Some Kind of Courage are all great reads as well.

I am an ELA teacher and I read a lot of upper elementary and middle-grade lit. This book is one of my favorites. Beautiful. I loved it so much I bought additional copies because I have a long line of students waiting/wanting to read it.

Coyote is an appealing character! Her voice is authentic and full of love for the family she had and the one she has. A great story of living life after great loss.
