However the reason for my headline is that one is so joltingly taken aback by the author’s relating of the sheer obstructionism, back-stabbing, mendacity, ineptitude, indifference, indolence, and incompetence of the bureaucrats in the FBI. It is absolutely maddening to think that institutionalized petty turf wars are more important than supporting dedicated agents in the field. To think that such an inefficient agency, where things move at a glacial pace, such as the FBI, is charged with keeping our national security, really is a scary thought. No wonder the 9/11 hijackers flew under the radar at the FBI. One asks if there really is any radar at all. In the aftermath of 9/11 and other terrorist bombings, one hears news stories of agents whose warnings were ignored or whose investigations were stifled. This book will suggest that such things are the pattern and not the exception. I most heartily recommend this book if one has an interest in espionage activities during the cold war. It must be said that none of our intelligence agencies comes out shining in this book. In order to come to any similar conclusions, one must read the book. I encourage that.

It was hard for me to put the book down and go to work. Navarro's description of his interviews with Rod Ramsay and his use of body language and non-verbal communication to obtain detailed confessions is fascinating. His description of the bureaucratic infighting and turf wars within the FBI is infuriating and gripping. It is remarkable, not only that an agent would devote himself to such a mission to the detriment of his health and family life, but also that his wife would remain devoted and supportive despite his absence and obsession with the case. You will be riveted by his story. I found myself constantly wanting to talk to him about his knowledge of non-verbal communication, which I think I use in my profession but not nearly to the extent that he has. You want to get this book!

This was well written. There were SO many intimate details of the whole processes and agencies and personnel included in bringing these men to court I am shocked at the number of hours required and moreso that the bulk of it was taken on by just a few agents. It is really amazing that Joe Navarro lived to carry it through. It is frightening to now know how vulnerable we were made as a nation and as a people and our allies as well by just a handful of people. It has taken away some of my innocence and confidence of feeling free and safe here in the United States. Now I can really only pray that somehow we have gotten to a safer place and ways of maintaining the security we rely on. Recent activity in our justice department and infighting between agencies does not help with the feeling of safety. This book...is just a big revelation and is so clearly written as to make one feel she is living it herself. I am also shocked that Rod Ramsey is actually walking the streets again now. I can only surmise that since all of this is no longer classified, he can do no more damage. But with one so clever and intelligent and needy, it seems to be unwise to me to let him be free. And for Szabo to be still receiving his retirement pay from the US Army?! THAT SHOULD BE STOPPED ASAP! Wow.....

Fascinating true account of how greed, politics, and bureaucracy opens the door for a foreign power to annihilate the United States. It is one man's true account of a two year fight to arrest and prosecute those responsible while being stonewalled by the leaders of the agencies that are supposed to protect the free world. The hero maintains an exhausting, methodical process throughout and never takes "No" for an answer. it is also a tutorial in interrogation through non verbal communication. Once you start reading, it is very difficult to put this book down.

If you look through the surface of spy stories, they try to keep the reader excited but they are boring for me. Not so with this book, which is written in so intelligent way, that I finished it. It did meet all my expectations to find again the intelligent mind of the author. I have read “Dangerous Personalities” and was impressed how Joe Navarro presented this difficult subject. Decided to give it a try on this one, and again, beside the story itself, I found a pleasure to read intelligent text.

Just read it again. Even scarier the second time around. The world owes Navarro, big time! Read the book and some of today’s controversies about how “political” the FBI is alleged to be becomes starkly understandable.
