I wanted to like this book. I purchased it for a young girl named Lily who was turning 6. The art is gorgeous and the story started off well. However, right at the end there was a paragraph that just ruined the entire book. The story follows Lily on a magical adventure to reclaim strawberries (stolen by vikings) for a Scandinavian festival. Right at the end Lily is trying to teach the vikings to be nice so they can be forgiven and attend the festival and she instructs them to say:"I will not burn any houses down.I will not chop off anyone's head."No thanks. I don't need my children asking me "Why were they burning people's houses and chopping off their heads?!" I asked several mom friends to see if their reaction was the same and it was. We didn't understand why this had to be added.If you're writing a children's book I suggest you actually focus on your audience. This language is uncalled for in a book marketed as young as 4.Some kids are watching PG-13 movies at age 5 and I'm sure their moms are rolling their eyes at this review, but some kids are not comfortable with death and horror at this age. 4 is around the age when children actually begin to understand the finality of death, they don't need to be adding decapitation to their nightmares.
We love both the art and the story in this book. My kids have asked me to read it 3x today again. The world needs more brave girls, and my girls can relate to Lily as she explores the world with an open mindset. My 6yo wants to be Lily for Halloween now, she'll be cute as a button. Looking forward to the next book in the series!
I have read over 1,000 different books to my kids in the last year and Lily Huckleberry is definitely in our top 10 favorite books. My little girl is 5. The story is fun and the illustration Is amazing!!!
My 4 and 6 year old fell in love with this book as quickly as I did and it became their favorite in a matter of days. My 4 year old is still getting use to Pre-K and I think this book has helped him to think of his day as an adventure and how to be brave and try new things. I love the illustrations and messages and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!!
Oh my gosh, my two year old sits through this entire book and asks to read it again when we finish. It is just darling. Beautiful illustration, excellent adventure story. The protagonist is brave, friendly, open-minded, and just enough silly.
This book is so fun and creative! I love the adventure and unique style of the writer. Please do yourself a favor and get this adorable book for the kid in your life! It’s not just for girls!! My boys love it too!
My mom immigrated from Denmark when she was a kid and this book helped my kids reconnect with their Scandinavian roots
I bought this for my granddaughter. She is in first grade, and loves to read and look at pictures. The story is unique and the pictures are lovely. Beautiful book.
